President Bush Appoints Two ISI Books Authors to President's Council on Bioethics

ISI Books is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert P. George and Gilbert Meilaender by President George W. Bush to the President's Council on Bioethics. The Council will examine the question of embryonic stem-cell research, consider the medical and ethical ramifications of biomedical innovation, and recommend appropriate guidelines and regulations. Additionally, the Council will keep President Bush and the country apprised of new developments in the controversial biosciences.

"The Council's paramount objective will be to develop a deep understanding of the issues that it considers and to advise the President of the complex and often competing moral positions associated with biomedical innovation. The President has assembled a diverse group of individuals to address these matters, who will bring a variety of perspectives to these challenging issues. Council members have been chosen not only for their specialized knowledge, but also for their thoughtfulness and their devotion to serious ethical inquiry."
Ari Fleischer, White House Press Briefing, January 16, 2002
ISI Books recently published The Clash of Orthodoxies: Law, Religion and Morality in Crisis to much acclaim. In the book, Professor George argues that traditional moral positions on a range of contemporary issues are rationally superior to what he labels "the secularist orthodoxy." The ethical principles of the great religious traditions of the West are, he says, rationally defensible; secularist liberal attempts to dislodge them ultimately fail the test of reason. Professor George exposes the faulty logic of arguments supporting embryonic stem-cell research and other practices that involve the deliberate destruction of innocent human lives.

In Things That Count, Christian ethicist Gilbert Meilaender offers guidance to those seeking to live upright and moral lives. Tackling difficult issues such as abortion and cloning, Meilaender helps us to regain the moral compass so desperately needed to navigate through these changing times.
