High Praise for Bonfire authors

In her Washington Sunday Times (July 29, 2001) review of ISI Books's Bonfire of the Humanities, Grace Vuoto emphatically lauds the efforts of its authors, Victor Davis Hanson, John Heath, and Bruce Thornton. Dr. Vuoto calls them "modern-day heroes in their fearless assault on an establishment which is often merciless in its persecution of dissenters." She demonstrates how the authors make a strong case for higher education reform, beginning with the educators themselves. In particular, the authors start their argument by focusing on their own colleagues: classics professors. The reviewer congratulates them for their unveiling of the overwhelming amount of time and money spent on obscure academic research that serves only to further alienate an already declining prospective student interest in the field.
