ISI Book Parties Highlight Bonfire of the Humanities and ISI's Choosing the Right College

Two festive back-to-back book parties were held on June 13th and 14th, at the University Club
in New York City and the Fund for American Studies in Washington, respectively, to celebrate the recent publication
of two significant books dealing with higher education. Bonfire of the Humanities, by Victor Davis Hanson,
John Heath, and Bruce S. Thornton, and the revised and expanded second edition of ISI's best-selling college guide,
Winfield Myers comments on ISI's College Guide |
Choosing the Right College (edited by Winfield J.C. Myers), were highlighted at these well-attended events. Both receptions featured remarks from Bruce Thornton, professor of classics at California State University, Fresno, and author of Plagues of the Mind (ISI Books, 1999) and Mr. Myers. Professor Thornton spoke about the current crisis in the classics and the promise for a new movement of "academic populism," touching on some of the major themes of his book, while Mr. Myers spoke about the state of education in the United States as a whole.
Attendees included friends and supporters of ISI Books and media personnel from
U.S. News and World Report (see photo),
National Review (see photo),
The Weekly Standard,
and The Washington Times (see photo).
Both evenings were enjoyable for all involved, with one excited D.C. guest commenting, "this event was great; being able to meet the authors and ask them questions was invaluable." Overall, the book parties provided an opportunity to highlight these two major works, which combine to give anyone concerned about the state of higher education an insider's tour of the condition of America's top schools and their central academic disciplines.
