Securing Democracy Editor Visits C-Span's Washington Journal
Gary L. Gregg II, editor of ISI's recent title, Securing Democracy: Why We Need the Electoral College, spent the morning after this past election day speaking about the new collection, a survey conducted by the McConnell Center for Political Leadership in Louisville, KY, and answering calls to the popular C-Span television program. Many of the questions on Washington Journal focused on last year's presidential election debacle and were either in firm approval or disapproval of Dr. Gregg's answers on the subject. Dr. Gregg emphasized that the Electoral College "forces parties to cast their nets wide", avoiding multi-party elections and uneven presidential victories which could end in radical, even tyrannical, rule. Gregg continued, mentioning that if there were no Electoral College, candidates would only visit the heavily-populated states, neglecting the rest of the country. Many callers agreed and one even used Italy as an example of the chaos created by a multi-party system.
